Concert Review: Highlight Live 2017 “Can You Feel It?”

Highlight held its first concert under its new stage name at Jamshil Indoor Stadium on June 2, 3, and 4, 2017.  The concert took place at the very site where the members had first debuted as “B2ST” (Beast) in 2009.  Over 20,000 fans filled up the sold-out arena for two and a half hours of song and dance, featuring new releases from their new “Can You Feel It” and “Calling You” albums, as well as former Beast hits.

The Highlight fandom, now called “Light,” waved their high-tech USB connected glowsticks as members Yoon Doo-joon, Yong Jun-hyung, Yang Yo-seob, Lee Gi-kwang, and Son Dong-woon belted out their powerful and amazingly stable vocals.  The atmosphere was electric as the centrally-controlled glowsticks changed colors from, blue, white, red, silver, yellow, and purple, to reflect the mood of the song being performed.  The Lights seemed to have an unwritten agreement regarding when they would listen attentively, and when they would go rowdy in “taechang,” the wild unison sing-along that is an essential part of the K-pop live concert experience.

So how was this concert different from their performances as Beast, other than missing member  Jang Hyun-seung (who left the team in April 2016)? Whereas previous Beast concerts included a mix of solo and unit performances, the 2017 Highlight concert had every number being performed by the entire group.  It was as if the members wanted to display on stage their solidarity and team spirit, which had kept them strongly united during their rocky transition from Beast (Cube Entertainment) to Highlight (Around Us Entertainment).  The non-stop singing and dancing had the members breathing heavily during the three talk breaks.

During the press conference held before the Saturday night show, Highlight members declared that they wanted their show to be a fun and energetic experience from beginning to end.  Yoon Doo-joon said he no longer wanted to see their fans shed tears or suffer heartache during their concert.  It was unclear whether he was referring to the sad, melancholic songs that had been a part of the Beast repertoire, or the trauma of their fans at the disbandment of Beast.  Well, Highlight definitely reached its goal that night.  The bright energy that marks their new single “Plz Don’t Cry” carried on throughout the entire evening, with the fervor of the stars matching the enthusiasm of the crowd.  The “Can You Feel It” concert will probably be the “highlight” of the year for the lucky fans who were able to purchase tickets for the show.

Highlight told Asiwave that it plans to tour in as many countries as possible to meet their global fans.  The group will perform at the Hong Kong Asia World Expo Hall 10 on July 29.  Shows are also planned for Japan and Taiwan.
